从词源学来看，Mantra一词包含词根“man”，意思是“思考”，和后缀“—tra”意思是“工具”。因此，字面上可翻译为“思维的工具”。中文意译为“真言”，意即真实之语，也就是本来的声音。由此可见Mantra还代表了一种思维的方式，即认为宇宙能量是通过声音的振动来发挥作用的。密宗瑜伽（Tantra）认为，万物都是声音。造物主（Para）通过“词（Shabda）”使存在得以发生。世界上的所有物体，都是不同频率和振幅的振动。
